What California Fire Defense is

The wildfire-vegetation practice of Urban Forestry Guide, a Bay Area consulting arborist firm. Same arborist, same reports, same pricing. This site exists because wildfire questions — Zone 0, inspection notices, insurer letters, "can I remove this tree for fire safety" — deserve their own guides, and because the collision between defensible space law and local tree ordinances is a specialty most landscapers and most fire agencies don't cover.

What it isn't

  • Not a tree service. We don't sell, bid, manage, or refer tree work. Consulting fees are the only revenue, and we take no referral fees, so planning departments, insurers, and both sides of a neighbor dispute get a report with no contractor behind it.
  • Not a fire agency. Your fire district's inspection is the one that counts legally. We write the plan that gets you through it.
  • Not an insurance agent or an IBHS evaluator. We document vegetation conditions to a professional standard; carriers make their own decisions.

How the work is done

  • Every site visit is done by Michael personally. No subcontracted inspectors.
  • Reports are written to the specific checklist your city or district publishes, and cite it.
  • Fees are confirmed in writing before the visit. Consultations paid at booking; reports 50% deposit, balance on delivery; Zelle or Venmo.
  • Written reports in 7–10 business days. 48-hour turnaround available for single-tree reports.

Editorial standard for the guides on this site

Every guide is written by Michael, cites the primary source (statute, regulation, fire-district page, UC ANR or CAL FIRE publication), and carries the date it was last checked. Program details — grants, chipper days, inspection seasons — change every year; if you find something stale, email a correction and it gets fixed and re-dated.
